The mission of Healthy People 2020 is to set clear targets for improving the health of all people in the US.
1. Be tobacco-free
A tobacco-free society is one of the key healthy people 2020 targets that should be achieved in a set number of years.
2. Achieve health equity – eliminate disparities
Healthy People 2020 defines health disparities as differences in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and burden of diseases and other adverse health conditions that exist among specific population groups in the United States. Health disparities can be divided into the following four categories:
racial or ethnic minorities such as African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, Native Americans, and Alaska Natives; people who have a disability, including individuals with mental health and substance use disorders; low-income populations; and social determinants of health such as education, income, and the social and physical environment.
3. Increase quality, access, safety, efficiency – improve USA healthcare
Healthy People 2020 also defines the factors that influence how individuals obtain and use health care services. These factors include:
health insurance coverage for all; mental and behavioral health services; primary and preventive services such as cancer screenings and vaccinations; chronic disease management; evidence-based practice in health care; patient safety and quality of care.
4. Promote healthy early childhood development
In the United States, Healthy People 2020 encourages all babies to begin living healthy and free from preventable conditions so they have the best chance at a healthy future. This is why it’s so important for women who are pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant to take good care of themselves by eating right, staying fit, and avoiding harmful substances such as cigarettes.
5. Promote health during all stages of life
In the US, people experience different life stages that can result in changes to their physical, social, or mental health. The 20 topics identified in Healthy People 2020 for this section include:
infants and toddlers; children and youth; students, parents/caregivers, educators, and the workforce; men and women of reproductive age; pregnant women, mothers, and families; adults with disabilities, older adults.
6. Create healthful environments
The seventh section of Healthy People 2020 includes a variety of topics that promote healthy communities where people live and work. The topics listed in this section of Healthy People 2020 include:
access to safe and affordable housing; healthy food and physical activity environments; safe neighborhoods and access to social support.
7. Advance health worldwide
Healthy People 2020 extends the concepts of improving health domestically to improve the global stage. As a result, certain topics are included in this section of the initiative, including:
health and the global economy; health in all policies (national, local, and global); food safety; improving access to medicines.
8. Strengthen scientific base for prevention
The ninth section of Healthy People 2020 encourages scientific discovery that can lead to new information about preventing disease. The topics listed in this section of the initiative include:
children’s environmental health; other designated topics.
9. Create a culture of health in all settings

schools; workplaces; faith communities; health care settings.
