1. People with disabilities are to feel good about themselves

Having fun is mandatory if people with disabilities are to feel good about themselves and their lives.

2. People with disabilities should be at the forefront

People with disabilities should be at the forefront of organizing events that’ll offer them the opportunity to have fun in positions of leaders, decision-makers, and active participants, not just mere spectators who were at best used for photo opportunities for most events.

3. Don’t patronize people with disabilities by planning events

Don’t patronize people with disabilities by planning events that are aimed at teaching them lessons of life or lessons of how to enjoy themselves. People with disabilities are free human beings who have equal rights to enjoy life as any other human being on this planet earth without discrimination, pity, and patronage.

4. Don’t plan events to teach people with disabilities life skills.

Don’t plan events to teach people with disabilities life skills. Mind you, they have been surviving without any help from anyone for decades and some of them even centuries before the term disability was coined.

5. Don’t allow people to choose between two evils or two bad choices

Don’t allow people with disabilities or their parents to choose between two evils or two bad choices when planning events that are meant for having fun. For instance, don’t allow them to choose between the poolside or the cultural show. If poolside, be sure to have a pool where they can swim without any help from anyone else. If beach party, make sure there are wheelchairs to transport people with disabilities onto the sandy beaches or at least ensure that there are ramps for wheelchairs so that they can sit by the beach and enjoy the sun and sand.

6. Religious places should not be used for celebrations of any kind

Religious places should not be used for celebrations of any kind, including those that are organized as part of organizing world mental health day 2020 activities. This is because disability is a natural phenomenon like birth or death which has nothing to do with religion except when religious groups annoy people with disabilities by coming up with religious beliefs that discriminate against them or insult them in any way.

7. People with disabilities must be allowed to make their own choices

People with disabilities must be allowed to make their own choices when planning events on how they want to celebrate world mental health day 2020, on what they would like to do, and on whom they choose as friends for a good time. Parents should not be allowed to interfere with these choices. Parents should not be allowed to impose their choice of friends on people with disabilities if they are underage.
